“And they always find
in archeology “a series of small walls.”
Every time, a series of small walls. Everywhere you go. “We’ve found a series
of small walls, we’re very excited… I think this proves they had walls in olden
days. They were very small, and… a series of small wall people.” - Eddie Izzard
When I was 5 or 6 years old, my parents gave me the kid's
version of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Archeology. I immediately fell in love with the cover, a
collage of undwerwater ruins, golden relics, and ancient human remains. At the time, I was convinced I could be an
archeologist, a ballerina and a circus performer all at once. Now, my dreams of dancing in Swan Lake while
simultaneously riding a horse backwards have been routed by my innate lack of
grace or my inability to stand on my toes for more than 30 seconds. I lost interest in being in the circus by the
time I was 8, and dancing fell by the wayside not long after. Such is the way
of childhood career dreams. But my love
of archeology, anthropology, and history has been a flame, frequently growing
and rarely flickering, for almost 20 years now.
This summer, I get to add real fuel to the fire. I will be assisting at an archeological dig
run by the Slavia Foundation,
excavating the remains of people executed on suspicion of being Vampires during
the Medieval Period.
There are no words to describe how deeply excited I am for this
opportunity. Not only do I get to fulfill a childhood aspiration turned
life-long passion, but I am taking the opportunity to explore parts of Europe I’ve never experienced,
since I’ll already have dropped a mind boggling amount of money on a plane
ticket anyway.
Here I will be cataloging- to the best of my ability- my
various finds, forays and fuck ups (of
which there will be many, I can pretty much guarantee). As much as I am legally allowed to share, I
will provide you with updates on what we find at the dig, as well as anything
else I learn along the way!
